History of Tapas
The delightful range of flavors is not the only thing that makes tapas so interesting.
Tapas have an equally fascinating history that goes back to the time when Spain was under the rule of the kings.
During an illness the Spanish King Alfonso X suffered, he was only permitted tidbits of food between small sips of wine.
This precautionary tactic averted the harmful effects of alcohol on an empty stomach because these small pieces of food would absorb the wine.
Once cured, the king decreed that no wine be served unless there were chunks of food to go along with it.
Another famous theory is that tapas originated as snacks field workers would munch on during the long hours between breakfast and dinner.
Regardless of which of these legends is the real source of their origination, over time these tidbits evolved into the irreplaceable and irresistible Spanish tapas.
So irreplaceable that the Spanish have now coined a term “Tapear” which literally means to go and grab a tapa!
Tapear!
Whether you’re hosting a brunch, a lunch or a full-course dinner, Spanish tapas are the most economical and easiest way to get your guests to fall in love with your cooking.
As is the case with a majority of Spanish eatables, most ingredients used to make tapas, such as olive oil and garlic, are delightful bursts of Mediterranean flavours.
But olives, nuts, crisps, tortilla, sardines, small fish and vegetables are just some of the most common tapas.
The Spanish Omelet, known as the Tortilla Espanola, is a local favourite consisting of a simple mix of potatoes, eggs and onions.
Another quick and easy variety of Spanish tapas for garlic lovers is the Garlic Shrimp, Gambas al Aljillo.
Getting acquainted with these and other mouthwatering Spanish Tapas is definitely not something you would want to miss out on.
